Vitoria-Gasteiz also boasts the certification of Biosphere as Sustainable Tourism Destination.
It is said by visitors to the city that it surprises visitors due to its “natural resources” and they are not wrong. At present, the city boasts 42 square metres of green areas per inhabitant which makes us the European city with the most consolidated green spaces.
Furthermore, we have almost fifty kilometres of cycle lanes and paths to walk or cycle along, go birdwatching, observe deer or go horse riding.
As far as culture, leisure and sports are concerned, the city has a wide range of activities programmed for all types of public, aiming to satisfy different tastes.
Not forgetting of course the food and wine of Álava, from the sophisticated recipes of the so-called “new Basque cuisine” to our famous pintxos. Top tip: everything will taste better accompanied with a wine from the vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa or with a glass of txakoli from Álava. And for dessert, don’t forget to try our sweet treats as these have had a good reputation since the 18th Century, especially the chocolates, confits and jams.
If you have some free time, we recommend you go and visit the areas surrounding the city, maybe visiting a Valle Salado de Añana (Salt Valley), observe a waterfall or go down into the Medieveal wineries of the Rioja Alavesa.
